Prevent Credit Problems from the Guide to Good Credit

Credit problems usually result from a lack of communication between the consumer and the creditor. The consumer is not always responsible for credit problems which occur. Losses which occur due to mail, delayed payments and clerical/computer errors are the most common credit problems blamed on the creditor. Some of the prevalent reasons consumers develop credit problems are: unreported changes of address, underpayment, missed payments, and the most common of over extension of credit.

Keep addresses current with every creditor. If you are planning a move, notify your creditors beforehand. You can pick up, free of chrge, change of address cards from the post office.

If problems arise that make it impossible to make the full monthly payment, FIRST, contact your creditor, in person, by phone ,e-mail or written communications and explain the entire situation. Don’t put it off until tomorrow, do it TODAY! Pay as much as possible on the account and if at all possible bring the account up to date the next month. Most creditors are willing to work with you and retain you as a customer in good standing if you advise them of the circumstances. Avoiding your creditors will cause distrust and result in unfavorable information on your credit report.

Always safeguard your cards by recording account numbers, names, addresses and phone numbers of the creditors on all credit accounts. Be sure to keep this list separate from your credit cards and always report “immediately” any loss, theft or possible misuse (within 24 hours). This will reduce the possibility of fraudulent use of your credit cards and any personal liability. The services of a credit card protection service are recommended. They will report to your creditors “immediately” the loss or theft of all your credit cards upon one single call from you. Difficulties arising from fraudulent use of stolen credit cards account for about 25% of all credit problems. Check any Bank you do business with, most offers this service.

By preventing credit problems and using your credit wisely you can actually save money. By having good credit you will benefit from lower interest rates and you can take advantage of sales and avoid future price increases.

Preventing Suicide: A Guide For Professionals And Care Givers
One of the greatest failures of counselors and caregivers of persons with mental health problems is becoming complacent in attending to the urgency of our clients' situation.  We get used to the depression waxing and waning and the periodic crises.  We get desensitized to the constant crises of our patients with borderline traits.  We get lax when our depressed patients start to come out of their depression, when in fact, this is when they are most likely to commit suicide.  These are all common reasons that patients seemingly commit suicide with no warning.  As a clinician and/or guardian of someone who is depressed or has bipolar disorder, there are several things you can do to prevent unnecessary tragedy.

It is simple to increase our effectiveness with the ABC(DEF)s.  A is for assessment.  A mental health assessment needs to be conducted and documented at each contact. B is for believe.  It can be tempting to dismiss emotional upset as "just another passing crisis" but it is this attitude that prevents us from helping people stay alive.  C is for consult.  When you have a client in crisis, have a colleague you can consult with.  They are less likely to miss subtle changes in the client's presentation and can provide unbiased advice.  Additionally, it is good practice at the beginning of a relationship to get a release to speak with the patient's physician.  In the event that he or she is medication noncompliant or using alcohol or other drugs with prescribed medications in a way that is dangerous (i.e. taking Risperdal and 1/5 of rum), it is important to consult with the patient's prescribing physician. D stands for document.  Every single progress or contact note must include evidence that you completed at least a mini mental status exam.  E is for educate.  Equip your clients with tools to help them get through crises and deal with triggers.  This includes emergency numbers, life pact/crisis action plan, cognitive behavioral interventions to get through an acute situation and information about the dangers of any medication noncompliance or other risky behaviors.  Finally, F is for follow up.  If a patient misses an appointment, it is best to follow up that same day, but at least within 24 hours and document that effort.  When patients call or present in crisis is is sometimes appropriate to follow up with them 24 hours after the contact to see how they are doing.  In some extreme cases, a follow up may include a well being check by law enforcement.

Let's look at these a little more closely.  First and foremost, regularly assess the person's mental status. Are they alert or confused?  Can they make decisions?  Is there any change in eating or sleeping patterns?  Do they talk of suicide, hopelessness? Do they seem apathetic---not really enjoying anything?  Additionally, there are several key warning signs for suicide.  First, Do they have future plans?  If they are talking about a vacation, an upcoming holiday or even plans for tomorrow, it is a good sign.  Also, are they giving away and/or making arrangements for the care of their children/pets?  People who see suicide as immanent will usually be making arrangements for those people and creatures that are dependent on them. Each time you meet with the person, you should assess these things.  If you are a caregiver/guardian, just do a quick assessment in your head.  If anything seems amiss, get the person in for a formal evaluation.  If you are a clinician, this evaluation must be a part of every progress note.  It is even a good practice to do a mini mental status exam (and document it) each time the person calls, especially if it is due to a crisis or to cancel an appointment.

There are also other factors that can help to mitigate/prevent suicide.  For one, pay attention to the patient's triggers.  For some people it is a holiday, for others it might be the anniversary of the death of a loved one or a pet and still for others it might be a situation that reminds them of a trauma in the past such as news coverage of a disaster, seeing a bad traffic crash etc.   When these times are coming up, at least part of your sessions leading up to the trigger time should involve preparation for dealing with any feelings that arise.  Devise a safety plan.  For patients who might be triggered by a situation such as a traffic crash, these preparations should take place in the beginning of therapy.  This way, whenever they run into a trigger they have some tools to deal with it.   Another responsibility we as clinicians have, whether we take insurance or not, is to ensure the person has access to an emergency appointment (phone or face to face) within 24-hours of going into crisis. Since patients do not always call us when they go into crisis, it is a good practice to follow up with patients within 24 hours of a missed appointment.

Finally, many clinicians feel hamstrung about the issue of reporting patient medication noncompliance.  For many patients, medication noncompliance (either monkeying with dosage or using alcohol or drugs with their medication) is life threatening.  There is not currently case law that I know of, but a clinician that knowingly allows clients potentially create a deadly cocktail by mixing alcohol or drugs with certain medication potentially could be held liable for failure to protect a person in imminent danger.  For many patients, medication noncompliance is their way of indicating that their medications need to be adjusted.  In the beginning of therapy, I have patients sign a release allowing me to talk with their physician.  There are a multitude of reasons that the physician may need to be consulted, so this is helpful.  I do however make a pact with my patients that I will tell them before I call their doctors. If during therapy I find out they are noncompliant I have my patients sign an agreement that outlines the dangers of their medication noncompliance, states they will stop doing what they are doing, will notify their doctor and will bring back proof of that notification to me.  I follow up with the patient each session on this issue until the issue is corrected.  It is an art to handle this in a way that does not push the patient away, but lets them know you are genuinely concerned.  

Since crises will come up despite your best efforts, it is advisable to do a life pact at the first session with patients who are severely depressed, have bipolar disorder or evidence a personality disorder. This life pact should contain emergency contacts, information about the availability of weapons, directions to the person's house, a contract to go to the emergency room or call 911 before they harm themselves, the number to the local crisis center and a notification statement to the person that if you feel they are in immanent danger you will be sending law enforcement to do a well-being check.

If you employ all of these techniques, you will be much less likely to have to experience the loss of a patient or loved one who is under your care.

A state of congruency where your whole life fits together to form a beautiful picture just like a jigsaw puzzle is a worthwhile goal, but how do you get there?

One of the keys is to recognise that all the different parts of your life are ultimately governed by a set of universal rules or principles.

An example is kindness – being kind to friends and family is something that we all recognise as the “right thing to do” and will bring us rewards in terms of stronger and better relationships with our friends and family. Being kind to a stranger can reward you with a better feeling about yourself.

Being kind to your body results in better health, being kind to your co-workers, your employees, your boss will bring benefits in your work life…

Kindness is a universal principle that we can all recognise and that as individuals we can all integrate into our lives and our spirits.

There are many of these principles – love, fairness, being proactive, being responsible for yourself, honesty, integrity… The challenge is to find these principles and align your life around them.

You should remember that principles are deep, fundamental, universal, timeless truths recognised by all religions and systems of belief as being central to harmonious and successful human lives. If you look at them in this way, they can be separated from the more transient beliefs and values of people and groups that sometimes get mistaken for principles.

Principle centred living will lead to a congruent life, the challenge is to build your life around principles.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PRINCIPLES AND PRINCIPLE CENTERED LIVING?

Stephen Convey’s timeless classic “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is a good place to start. The book claims that it is based on the universal principles and as you read it you will find out that this is true.

One of the sections of the book is dedicated to organising your life around principles and making sure that they are integrated across all the different parts of your life in a congruent way. Perhaps the best piece of advice is to get a copy of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, read it and start applying some of the wisdom that’s inside.

One final word of caution – living your life around principles is no quick fix – it takes time, maybe even an entire lifetime to get there, but the results can be very rewarding!

Problem Blushing: A Mild Annoyance Or A Serious Problem?
There is a fine line between blushing easily and blushing excessively.  Blushing easily can be a mild annoyance, but blushing excessively can become a physical and mental disaster.  Some people who tend to blush easily unfortunately find their problem intensifying to a severe level.  

People who blush easily might be quick to blush when they are embarrassed, blush a few times every week.  People who blush excessively blush much more frequently and for many different reasons.  Problem blushers frequently find themselves blushing several times each day, in response to all sorts of emotional triggers and thoughts, both positive and negative.  

As blushing becomes a more frequent and intense problem, it becomes more of a chronic and nightmarish condition than simply a mild annoyance.  Blushing problems can become so severe that they can affect every facet of a person’s life.  Excessive blushing often becomes an unbearable problem, and it can result in serious emotional, social, psychological, and even physical problems.  

For problem blushers, simple daily interactions with other people become sources of dread and discomfort.  They become consumed by an overwhelming fear and dread of blushing, which ironically increased the frequency and intensity of their blushing episodes.  

Because problem blushing is so hard to understand by people who don’t suffer from the problem, it is often not given the serious attention and credibility it deserves.  Problem blushing just doesn’t seem like a legitimate health concern to people who don’t have firsthand experience with it.  However, for those who have a problem with excessive blushing, the condition and resulting complications are real and often debilitating.

If you find yourself blushing frequently, it is a good idea to start working solving your problem blushing behaviour before it intensifies the excessive level.  Even if your blushing problem has already become an excessive one, there are positive steps you can take to reduce the severity of your problem.

The overwhelming feelings of hopelessness and helplessness commonly experienced by problem blushers can be significant barriers to making positive change.  For problem blushers, the hardest part of putting a stop to excessive blushing is to actually start the process of changing.  

The sooner you start to take positive steps toward putting a stop to your blushing problems, the faster you will be able to see that there is hope for ending excessive blushing.  You just have to make a decision start taking positive steps to control your blushing, rather than allow blushing to control your life.

Problem Or Prespective - Spirituality Information
More often than I care to admit, I bump into a problem that shakes the very core of my being and challenges the heart of my belief system. At such times, I feel the world closing in around me and a tendency toward desperation begins to raise its ugly head. My first impulse is to fight back, to attack the attacker, to react by either running from or toward the problem.

But I do not follow my first impulse any longer. I now stand back and look at the problem for a while. I observe it from different points of view, all the while realizing that I am not the problem but that the problem is just an indication of a small adjustment I have to make in my thinking.

No problem is bigger and more powerful than we are. We are all children of the Infinite. The Universe is biased on our side. We have within us untapped strength and wisdom to deal with all challenges that come our way.

All problems have within them the seeds of their solution. We must learn to listen to the Silence, to hear the instructions from within and to follow the "still small voice." Life whispers to us all the time. It tells us to go this way or that, to take this road or the other. When we are frightened by what appears to be major problems, we block the "still, small voice" from our consciousness and only hear the howling winds and the thunder of the storm.

Find a quiet spot in the middle of the turbulence. Go to a quiet place within your soul and stay there for a short while. Do not rant and rave at the problem. Just go to this spot and let your fears be calmed, even for a moment. Don't listen to the call of the problem but, rather, listen for a few seconds to the song of your soul.

I often say that it's not what's happening around you that causes anxiety, but what you think about what's happening around you. Remove your thoughts from the problem for a short while. Don't try NOT to think about the problem. That doesn't work. Just remove your focus from the problem and think of something else. With a little practice, it becomes second nature.

Know that you're bigger and stronger than anything that seems to annoy you. Look away, for a short while, from your problem and know that its solution is coming to you. Trust the force that created you and placed you in this part of the universe. Trust the process that has sustained you until now. Let go of the problem. Remember that it is not the problem that's holding on to you, but that it's you who are holding on to it.

Let it go. Don't be like the man who was frantically rowing away from shore while his boat was firmly tied to the dock. If you want to get to the other side of the problem, you must cut the rope that's holding you to the dock.

Soon you'll begin to see signs that you're on your way to success. Don't stop what you're doing and look around all day for such signs. You WILL see them. Ideas will come to you. You'll have strange urges to take action by calling someone, writing a letter, sending an email. This is the "still, small voice" speaking to you.

Your problems are not more powerful than you are. You have the key to success. It is your birthright. No one can ever take it away from you. Be still and know who you are. Be calm and feel the countless tides of the centuries running through your mind. Know that you're unique and that there is not another human being on this earth that has the combination of talents and abilities you have. You are as valid as the sun and the stars.

Procrastination Kills, Kill Procrastination
In the fight against malaria, some television adverts were launched and they all ended with the same message: "mosquito kills, kill mosquito!" In my own fight against a destroyer of destinies, I will also want to adopt the same theme.

Procrastination has destroyed so many people with great potentials. It has made the grave the richest place on earth all because by procrastinating; so many people have died without utilizing the huge potentials within them.

So many people are living lives of quiet desperation not because the do not know what to do but because they have put forward what they were supposed to do, far too much. They have procrastinated on what they were supposed to have done in order for them to achieve their dreams and by so doing have not being able to achieve much in their lives.

Procrastination, if not dealt with, is going to cause so many damages in the lives of so many people. People that do not act on their dreams are in no way different from people that have no dreams. They all end up with the same result in their lives and that is retrogression. I am sure you don't want this to be your lot.

The only known antidote to procrastination is ACTION. When there is something to be done, all you need to do, is to follow Nike's advice: JUST DO IT! When you act on your dreams, procrastination dies and it has no root within you.

Without action, nothing can be achieved and by acting, there is so much to be gained. I wonder if the technological advancements we are witnessing today would have being possible if those that conceived their ideas had procrastinated.

I believe you can achieve so much in your life if you begin to do what you are supposed to do NOW. Make yourself a person of ABSOLUTE action and in the nearest future, your dreams will become a reality.

Do you believe that if you do what other successful people do you will also become successful? You should, because your beliefs become your reality!

There is a song with a line in it that goes: Free your mind, the rest will follow…

That is absolutely correct. Our thinking is the critical factor in how our daily lives turn out. Because you BECOME what you THINK ABOUT most of the time. So think about your goals and how to get them most of the time.

GOALS: It is essential to have goals; you have to have a focal point. Write down on a piece of paper 10 goals that you have. Which one is the most important to you? Focus on that goal.

OPTIMISM: This is a key characteristic of Successful People.

Eliminate the negative emotions that can and do hold you back. Don’t worry about things you can’t change. If you like to play the blame the game or whine about why this or that isn’t working out for you or you make excuses for your lack of success, you will continue to be what you are now – unsuccessful.

HOW: Successful people think about what they want and HOW to get it most of the time.

Time Management Approach
(A): Actions that move you in the direction of a goal that you want
(B): Actions that do not move you in the direction of a goal that you want

It is human nature to do the easy tasks first or the actions that do not achieve the results that you desire for your business. This is the greatest enemy to your success. Do only (A) actions, the actions that move you in the direction of your goals.

HOURLY WAGE - NOT YEARLY INCOME. Successful people think in terms of how much they are worth an hour and only do actions that will help them achieve their desired results. Think about it… What are you doing right now? What are the tasks you perform every day to move you closer to your goals. Are they worth $50 an hour? Would you pay someone else $50 an hour to do what you did today? Remember you only get paid for results.
